Couple enjoy retirement in Pass Christian
Sun Herald Newspaper – Sun, Dec. 28, 2003
Dee and Herb Horst (shown in photo above at top left) have the retirement home many folks dream of (second photo below). Their property sits on the edge of Pass Christian Isles Golf Course. When they were living in Hershey, Pa., they decided to move back South and looked at sites between Mobile and New Orleans when a Realtor told them about the Pass Christian property. When they saw it, they knew it had to be theirs. They made a few changes to house plans they had perfected over the years and moved South. One of the changes was adding a large door to their 2½ car garage to allow them to drive the golf cart out without moving cars. They had lived in Gretna, La., at one point while Herb worked for Western Auto covering the territory of Gulfport to Houma, La., so he had spent time on the Mississippi Coast. He has a brother in Mobile, too. Originally from Lebanon, Pa., where he grew up on a farm with four brothers, he had returned to Hershey to go into the insurance business with a brother after working for Western Auto. His brother, Gene, lives in California, Ken lives in Palmyra, Pa., Chet lives in Annville, Pa., and Kent (Sock), lives in Mobile. They had a large farm where they did truck farming, plus ran a dairy and raised hogs. He remembers planting 10 acres of Irish and sweet potatoes. They had a 20-acre apple orchard. Herb attended college for a couple years before joining the Air Force. He completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio before he headed for Germany to participate in the Berlin Airlift. He was chosen because he could speak German. He returned to the United States to Langley Field in Virginia, then was sent to Lawson Field in Columbus, Ga. While there, he met Dee on a blind date.
Dee Wilson Horst grew up in Moultrie, Ga. Her two brothers, Bryan and Max and sister, Carolyn, still live in Georgia. Her sister, Barbara, lives in Dallas, Texas, and sister, Sue, lives in Missouri. She became a telephone operator after graduating from high school. When Herb was sent to France and soon transferred to Germany, Dee joined him, and they were married. They have a German marriage license and their first child's birth certificate is German. They returned to Jacksonville, Fla., where Herb was in recruiting for seven years before being sent to Thule, Greenland, for an eight-month assignment before he was sent back to Jacksonville for recruiting with a specialty in advertising. A promotion sent him to Warner-Robbins, Ga., to the South East Regional Headquarters to design brochures and handle public relations. The couple remained there until retirement. After retirement, they lived in Meridian where he took management training with Western Auto Supply and was assigned to the Southern Mississippi and Louisiana territory. He was with the company for 10 years before he moved back to Hershey, Pa. Dee had started playing golf with friends as a Sunday afternoon hobby while at Warner-Robbins; Herb also took up the game. In Meridian and Gretna, they got into it a little more but it was in Hershey that they really enjoyed golf and played with friends. Dee has won the Senior Women's Championship and the Super Senior Championship at age 65 at Pass Christian Isles Golf Course. She plays every Tuesday and belongs to the Ladies Gold Association, and she and Herb travel to different golf courses to play. They play three or four days a week, beginning early in the morning, so they can get back home to do yard work. Herb says his game is more for fun while Dee is a competitive golfer. He enjoys playing golf with friends at the Navy base, and they don't even keep score. Dee and Herb have been members of Grace Lutheran Church in Long Beach since they moved to the Coast 11 years ago in May 1993. Herb sings in the choir, is on the church council and serves as chairman of the Worship Committee. Dee serves on the Altar Guild and Fellowship Committee and the Service Committee that puts together the annual garage sale, the church's big fund-raiser. Proceeds from the sale buy baskets for the needy and other charitable projects. Herb and Dee found an elderly lady in need of a hot water heater during one of their deliveries, and the church was able to fill that need. All the members take turns mowing at the church. Herb and Dee have two daughters. Debbie Ballard works for AARP/United Health Services in customer service, dealing with prescriptions. She lives in Roanoke, Va. Her son, Justin, just completed four years in the Marines, and her daughter, Jessica, is a junior at Virginia Western College. Daughter Linda Marra lives in New Orleans. Her daughter, Jennie, just graduated from LSU with a degree in fashion merchandising and hopes to work with Ralph Lauren Corp. in New York, after being an intern there this past summer.
Herb and Dee run the road between New Orleans and home and travel to Virginia, Georgia and Pennsylvania. Last summer they enjoyed a 16-day trip, traveling to North Georgia for a family reunion, to Roanoke, to Pennsylvania for a special birthday, to Virginia Beach and to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to see friends. Not only do they enjoy playing golf, but they have landscaped their yard and have a year-round raised garden plot where they grow greens, snow and crowder peas, broccoli, squash, cauliflower, tomatoes, snappers, green beans, turnip greens and horseradish. They have cultivated a wide variety of plants. They are also a part of the Pass Christian Beautification Committee, which has done plantings in downtown Pass Christian and along U.S. 90. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in July 2003.
